Report on National Educational Policy in Disciplinary Implication

 

National Educational Policy was made in 1986 and the custodian committee for National Educational Policy was formed in May 2017. In 2015 the government decided to make progressive changes. This report discusses the implication and benefits of National Educational Policy in the field of psychology along with the few highlights.

 

1.      From primary education to higher education, the state government have to provide it at its best. Facilitating the students to become independent individual who helps the society in the future Teachers plays a major role and shapes the student's future. Children of age 3-8 are psychologically as well as developmentally ready to learn more but the medium and the modality of teaching have to be taken into account. Developmental psychologist and educational psychologist can provide more insight into it. Early childhood education was given importance and emphasized on imparting it with high quality.

2.     Social worker and psychologist should be working in the school complex. This gives the career opportunity to the counsellors and clinical psychologist to work in the school and providing assistance to the teachers' in facilitating the students. They will be helping the students from facilitating their skills and abilities, dealing with stress, and diagnosing for any developmental as well as educational concern. According to National Educational Policy, they want to ensure there are no dropouts. Counsellors and psychology researchers can help in identifying the reasons for it and provide solution.

3.     Children have a higher ability to learn between the age of 0-6 years. Nurturing and holding environment provide the children to learn better. Apart from that care, nutrition, psycho-social environment, emotional and cognitive-emotional stimulation are prominent. Educational policymakers, school administration, teachers and parents should take it into consideration.

4.     As there is a plan to include Indian contribution to the felid of yoga, mathematics as well as psychology. Psychology teachers can be employed in the school. Specialization of Indian psychology can be included and Indian psychologist could be employed in teaching it as it is an emerging field in India as well.

5.     Psychometricians are suggested in the plan for the National Educational Policy. They could help in developing needed scales and create an Indian version of few western scales. This will help in taking cultural values and Indian up bring as a major aspect while developing the scales.

6.     Counsellors and psychologist can be employed especially to help the students in dealing with the stress and the fear of board exams. Schools have to provide strong psychological support to the students and this can be implemented by employing mental health professionals.

7.      Usage of gadgets and technology is higher among the students due to the vast availability and utility. Even though it facilitates to an extent, its not healthy and hinders well-being. National Educational Policy suggested the risk of technology in sociological and psychological side-effects. It hinders the learning process, acquiring skills, spending more time on it and fewer interactions with the family members. The psychologist can do research in these areas and provide essential solutions. Parent training program and smart gadgets usage can be taught by the counsellors. Also, gadgets addiction should be addressed for their well-being.

8.     Good teacher education requires expertise across all areas connected to education - specialists in early childhood education, understanding and pedagogy of subjects, assessment, curriculum and material development, school leadership and management along with psychology, philosophy, sociology, knowledge of India, and history of education. Institutions that can provide for faculty across disciplines and offer different programs besides teacher education are best suited to run teacher preparation programs.

9.     The Master's in Education with a range of specializations would enable the development of professionals and researchers for various areas of education including pedagogic studies in different curricular areas, evaluation and assessment, school leadership and management, policy studies, foundational areas of education psychology, sociology, history and philosophy, financing of education, comparative and international education, and ICT and education. This would help these budding fields enthusiastic with career opportunities and create more professional and research development.

10.  Physical activities, arts and other extracurricular activities will be given equal importance as other core subjects. Inculcating abilities like critical thinking, a problem-solving ability that equips them for the future. Reducing the content in the subjects and increasing practicality was taken as mode for increasing the skills and ability of the students.

11.   Mandatory cross-disciplinary exposure in the grade 11th and 12th will facilitate the students and credits will be given for it. The idea of including vocational training at this level will facilitate the students.

12.   Changes in teachers' education like having 4-year integrated B.Ed. and it can be run inside the multidisciplinary higher education institutions. There will be no independent teachers' education institution will broaden the exposure of the teachers in training and equip them. Equal training and equal status for the teachers across the classes were emphasized.

13.   Inclusive and equitable education in National Educational Policy focuses on the under-represented and disadvantaged group. High-quality education and the need for investment on the same was emphasized. This will create job opportunities for the special educators, clinical psychologist, therapist, developmental psychologist and educational psychologist.

14.   Same bodies should not be playing different roles. Functional boards will be separated and clearly defined. The research will be given importance in the university. National Research Foundation will be created and functions independently for producing high-quality research.

15.   In higher education, there will be no affiliated colleges and no affiliating universities and no mono field institutions. There will be multi-disciplinary institutions that offer various undergraduate program and across fields. All the UG course should be coming in the form of liberal education.
