The Impact of the Draft National Education Policy - 2019on Commerce Discipline.
The Vision of the Draft -
The National Education Policy 2019 envisions an India-centered education system that contributes directly to transforming our nation sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society, by providing high quality education to all.
As quoted by Drew Faust - President of Harvard University,
Higher Education is the Strongest, Sturdiest ladder to increased socio-economic mobility.
Abstract:
Commerce is one of the widely chosen disciplines in India by the students as their Under Graduation Programme because of its vibrant career choices thereafter. Commerce gives a base for many specialized fields like Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Accountancy, Company Law and Secretarial practice, Auditing, Business Administration, Management, and Entrepreneurship and so on. This is the discipline which majorly contributes for the economic and Human Resource development in the country and therefore quality higher education should add more value to this discipline. The Draft New National Education Policy -2019 has some impacts on the higher education in the Commerce Discipline.
Introduction:
According to the All India Survey on Higher Education, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education in India has increased from 20.8% in 2011-12 to 25.8% in 2017-18 and the Draft National Education Policy - 2019 strives to increase the Enrolment ratio for higher education to attain 50% Post Graduates in the country by 2030 and consolidation of current 800 universities and 40,000 colleges into about 15,000 large, well-resourced, vibrant multidisciplinary institutions would result in positive or negative growth impacts on the enrolment of commerce discipline in the coming years.
Notable Impacts of NEP – 2019 on Commerce Discipline:
· Consolidating all Higher Educational institutions into three types namely Research Universities, Teaching Universities and Autonomous Degree Colleges would have less positive impact on commerce discipline as it is more of practical oriented discipline than theory to study in a classroom environment.
· Having more number of research universities may lead India to a Quality Education phase and would improve the Socio-Economic conditions of the country through commerce.
· Commerce discipline would not be requiring Teaching Universities in particular as this discipline is to be taught and learnt in a practical environment to increase the quality in the scholars.
· Autonomous Colleges would have a negative impact on the commerce stream as it would lead to difference in the Syllabi followed by these institutions which will affect the purpose of the national education policy.
· Building strong education communities across the country will make students available with the commerce discipline to choose for their higher education which is a good thing for commerce aspirants.
· Converting all Higher Educational institutions into Multi-Disciplinary institution would give a great opportunity to the commerce aspirants to choose courses as per their interests in the subject which would lead to improvement in the quality of learning and also increase the enrolment ration of higher education.
· High Quality liberal education as proposed in the NEP – 2019, will offer customized course options to the students to choose from which enhances the motivation in the students to specialize in the area of their interest.
· As mentioned in the Draft NEP – 2019 the collaborations with international universities will motivate commerce aspirants to continue their education with the financial and emotional support that the government would provide them.
· All commerce related subjects would require specialized faculty who can show the educational path to the student to grow professionally.
· Self-Governance would be a boon or curse to any country's education system as there won't be uniformity in the syllabi and conducting the exams and curriculum.
· Transforming UGC into Higher Education Grants Council would bring in the changes positively as it is aiming towards the quality accreditation of the universities.
· Integrating professional education into higher education would inspire the commerce aspirants to take up higher education in their academic career as this would reduce the classroom learning age.
· Research is the major strength of any economy, initiating National Research Foundation in India through NEP-2019 will lead the country towards quality Standard of living and will grow the economy in the faster phase.
Conclusion:
Draft National Education Policy – 2019 have good proposals into the higher education system in India which would improve the education enrolment ratio in the commerce discipline. If the proposed changes are implemented and followed rigorously then probably India can have more specialized commerce faculties and scholars to improve the Economy and Financial strength of the nation.
